MP stands for maintenance prevention. MP design therefore means design activity covering everything from planning through to execution across all the matters involved — whether the product, the machine or the management of production — so as to bring about cooperation, maintainability, economy, usability, safety and versatility, judged on the evidence of both technology and maintenance.
The activities of MP design
The study activity, at the stage of planning investment in machines and equipment, should calculate the following.
The technology to be used — both the production technology and the machine’s own
The machine’s capability, in quality and in quantity
The amount of the investment
The cost of operating — labour, material, maintenance, energy and so on
The activities at the execution stage are: design · manufacture · installation · trial running · production control.
Considering maintenance from the design stage means considering the product, the machine and the process — with MP design as the principle for designing, and LCC as the criterion for deciding.
